Add-on or piggy-back boxes are starting to show up in the market. Generally speaking, they allow for some adjustment to the fuel and timing map(s) and may have other tuning features. Better than a pre-programed chip because you can alter the settings as you add performance parts to the engine.
Of course, you really need to know what you are doing and have diagnostic equipment. A trip to a dyno might also be in order.
