How does the tire have to stick out that much to clear the hatch? If you have to swing it out of the way anyway... You could move the tire more towards the end of the arm that swings out, which will make it further away from the truck when open - put the jerry can holder on the other, "inside" of the arm.

Also, and maybe I'm just being picky - what's up with the space between the top of the bumper and the bottom of the trunk area? It looks like a good 2-3" drop in there.
